In a recent column in Popular Science Magazine on the Web
(www.popsci.com), Carol Hoidra discussed the "digital rectal examination"
for prostate cancer screening.  (From the "Science" section, select
"Between the Quacks".)  When I read column's headline, I thought someone
had developed a new, computerized test.  But as I started to read, I
quickly realized that I had forgotten the etymology for the word "digit".
